Reports indicate weak demand in the South Korean color-coated steel sheet and steel pipe market. Currently, steel mills are pricing at KRW 1.15 million/ton, while the market circulation price is just over KRW 900,000/ton, representing a discount rate of 20%. Considering the price of galvanized steel sheets is KRW 890,000/ton, color-coated sheets are essentially unprofitable. Steel pipes are no exception, with current sales experiencing high discount rates; approximately 15% for fluid pipes and around 20% for structural pipes.
Despite this, the sluggish sales situation remains unchanged. It is understood that the current capacity utilization rate for color-coated steel sheets and steel pipes in South Korea is below 80%, significantly impacting normal production due to high inventory levels. Furthermore, both industries share common issues such as overcapacity and a lack of distinctive features. It is reported that South Korea has over 250 steel pipe factories, yet only 8 produce galvanized steel pipes larger than 8 inches; the rest are smaller, survival-oriented enterprises.
While South Korean ERW welded pipes hold a certain advantage in the international market, the rapid development in mainland China poses a constant threat of being surpassed. The color-coated steel sheet industry also lacks distinctive features in both equipment and products. Industry experts point out that the rush to build factories and install identical equipment in the past has devalued products.
