A steel structure residential project, jointly developed and produced by a certain construction engineering company and Jilin University of Architecture, officially commenced the main structure's hoisting and installation on May 30th within the courtyard of Yu Xin Group in the Changchun Automobile Industry Development Zone. Li Baozheng, the deputy general manager of the construction engineering company, introduced that steel structure residential buildings use steel as the load-bearing beams and columns. Its advantages include light weight, high strength, and approximately half the weight of reinforced concrete residential buildings. It meets the needs of large residential spans, increasing the usable area by about 4% compared to reinforced concrete residential buildings. It also boasts good earthquake resistance, insulation, waterproofing, and sound insulation performance. Steel structure components are prefabricated in factories, reducing on-site workload, shortening construction time, and meeting the requirements of industrialization. Steel is recyclable, resulting in less environmental pollution during construction and demolition.

The main columns of this experimental residential building are square steel, with a beam-plate truss structure, a cold-rolled plate concrete surface layer on the floor, and wall panels that are large-span, insulated, volcanic slag concrete panels produced in the workshop, achieving a prefabrication rate of 90%. Because the main building materials are prefabricated panels and steel, the use of sand, cement, and bricks is significantly reduced, resulting in minimal construction waste at the site. Most importantly, steel is recyclable, causing less environmental pollution during construction and demolition.

The biggest difference from ordinary concrete construction sites is the significantly smaller workforce, with only about 10 people. It is understood that building a concrete residential building of the same area would require approximately 30 people, while a steel structure residential building requires only 13. This steel structure residential building completes one floor in a day, while a concrete structure of the same area would take 5 days. Due to the prefabrication of floor slabs and steel beams and columns in the workshop, significant time and labor are saved. This is still in the experimental phase; if it becomes industrialized mass production, it will be even faster and require less labor. Only one-third of the workers would be needed, and the labor hours would only be one-tenth. If the technology matures, it is possible to complete an 18-story building in just 10 days through industrialized construction.
